GRUENWALD, CLARK, KLOHS AND PIERCE WIN SILVER MEDALS AT PEER GYNT CUP IN KOLBOTN, NORWAY, FEB. 21-22 

Four U.S. wrestlers claimed silver medals at the Peer Gynt Cup of Greco-Roman wrestling in Kolbotn, Norway, Feb. 21-22.

The U.S. silver medalists were James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, Quincey Clark (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 187.25 pounds, Jason Klohs (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 213.75 pounds and Billy Pierce (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 286 pounds.

Gruenwald was defeated in the gold-medal finals by veteran Peter Stjernberg of Sweden in a 14-8 shootout. Gruenwald won three straight matches to qualify for the finals. A U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete, Gruenwald is currently ranked No. 2 in the USA at his weight class.

Clark, Klohs and Pierce train together in Minneapolis with the Minnesota Storm club, and are among the top young Greco-Roman talents in the nation.

Clark was defeated by technical fall in the finals by veteran Martin Lidberg of Sweden, 10-0. Clark won two bouts to qualify for the finals. He is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation at his weight class.

Both Klohs and Pierce won by injury default to qualify for the gold-medal round. Klohs was defeated by referee's decision by Marek Kraszewski of Poland, 1-0 in overtime. Pierce dropped a tight 3-2 decision to Alexander Neumiller of Austria. Klohs is ranked No. 4 in the USA, while Pierce holds a No. 2 national ranking.

Two U.S. wrestlers placed fourth in their weight classes: Derrick Mountsier (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 152 pounds and Ray Brinzer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 187.25 pounds.

Mountsier, competing on his first international tour, had a 2-2 record in the tournament. He was defeated in the bronze-medal match by Mattias Schoberg of Sweden, 8-1. Mountsier is currently ranked No. 4 in the USA.

Brinzer had a 3-2 record for the tournament, losing both of his matches to Toomas Proovel of Estonia. Proovel won 5-0 in the first round, then beat Brinzer 3-1 in the bronze-medal match.

Finland won the tournament with nine medal points, followed by the USA and Sweden tied in second with eight medal points. Eight nations were represented in the competition.

The U.S. team was coached by Dan Mello of Daphne, Ala. and Andy Seras of Niskayuna, N.Y.
