KOLAT AND STEINER WIN GOLD MEDALS AT YASAR DOGU TOURNAMENT IN ANKARA, TURKEY, FEB. 28-MAR. 1 

1997 World silver medalist Cary Kolat (Lock Haven, Pa. /Dave Schultz WC) and Terry Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) claimed gold medals at the 1998 Yasar Dogu Tournament of freestyle wrestling in Ankara, Turkey, Feb. 27-Mar. 1.

Kolat defeated A. Solovier of Russia 3-0 in overtime to capture the 138.75 pound title. Kolat won four bouts, including an impressive 3-0 victory over 1995 World silver medalist Takahiro Wada of Japan in the first round. Kolat was a two-time NCAA champion for Lock Haven Univ. and is the defending U.S. Nationals champion.

Steiner, who is ranked fifth at 152 pounds, defeated Taimuzol Ouroussov of Russia 2-0 in overtime to claim the gold medal at 152 pounds. Steiner won five bouts in the tournament, including two technical falls.

Steiner, a 1993 NCAA champion for the Univ. of Iowa, won the 1996 Freestyle World Cup. He is currently ranked No. 5 in the USA at his weight class.

Tom Erikson (West Lafayette, Ind./Sunkist Kids) claimed the silver medal at 286 pounds, losing to 1997 Junior World champion Aydin Polatci of Turkey in a 0-0 referee's decision in the gold medal finals.

Erikson won three bouts to make the finals, including a 6-2 win over Alexander Kovalevski of Russia in the semifinals. Erikson placed fourth in the 1997 World Championships and is the defending U.S. Nationals champion.

J.J. McGrew (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) placed fifth at 213.75 pounds, with a 3-2 record. McGrew is ranked No. 2 in the USA at his weight class.

Also placing in their weights for the USA were Sam Henson (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids), who placed sixth at 119 pounds and Sean Bormet (Madison, Wis./Dave Schultz WC) who placed ninth at 167.5 pounds.

The U.S. team was coached by Ed Giese of Lombard, Ill. and National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo.
