U.S. wrestling team which competed in Iran will visit President Clinton

The delegation from the USA Wrestling freestyle wrestling team that competed in Tehran, Iran in February will visit with President Bill Clinton in the Oval Office at The White House on Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. EST. 

This delegation was the first U.S. team in any sport to compete in Iran in almost 20 years. The tour received international media coverage, and was a major success for those who participated.

The U.S. team was in Tehran from Feb. 17-21, and participated in the Takhti Cup on Feb. 19-20.

Four of the five athletes who competed in Iran will attend the meeting at the White House: Zeke Jones (Chandler, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), Melvin Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), Shawn Charles (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sunkist Kids) and John Giura (New York, N.Y./Dave Schultz WC).

Jones competed at 54 kg/119 lbs. at the Takhti Cup and placed fourth. Jones was a World Champion in 1991, and was a 1995 World bronze medalist.

Douglas finished second at 97 kg/213.75 lbs. at the Takhti Cup. He was a 1993 World Champion, and was seventh in the 1996 Olympic Games.

Charles placed fourth at 63 kg/138.75 pounds and Giura wrestled at 69 kg/152 pounds at the Takhti Cup

The other team member, Kevin Jackson (Gilbert, Ariz./Team Excel), will not be able to attend due to a prior commitment. Jackson, a 1992 Olympic champion, won a gold medal at Takhti Cup at 85 kg/187.25 pounds. The head coach of the U.S. team in Iran, Joe Seay (Perry, Okla./Sunkist Kids), will not be able to attend.

The referee on the tour, Jim McCord of Alden, Iowa and medical officer on the tour, Dr. Bruce Reider of Hinsdale, Ill. will visit with President Clinton.

Other delegation members from the Iran trip participating in the White House visit are USA Wrestling President Larry Sciacchetano of Baton Rouge, La, and Mitch Hull of Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Wrestling's National Teams Director.

USA Wrestling Executive Director Jim Scherr of Colorado Springs, Colo. will also participate in the White House visit.

Search for Common Ground, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that specializes in conflict resolution, accompanied the U.S. wrestling team to Iran and worked closely in arranging the tour. Search for Common Ground played the key role in organizing the White House visit. John Marks and Bill Kirby of Search for Common Ground, who went to Iran with the U.S. wrestlers, will visit with President Clinton.

Also participating in the White House visit will be Bruce Laingin, who was the top-ranking U.S. official among the hostages in Iran and a public supporter of the U.S. wrestling tour to Iran.
