Iran announces lineup for 1998 World Cup in Stillwater, Okla., April 4-5

Iran has announced its lineup of athletes that will compete at the 1998 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., April 4-5. 

In addition to Iran, the 1998 World Cup will feature the United States, Russia, Cuba, Germany and Japan. This annual freestyle dual meet championships is behind only the World Championships and Olympics in importance.

The tournament marks Iran's first competition in the United States since the 1996 Olympic Games. Iran also competed in the 1995 World Cup in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Leading Iran will be 1997 World champion Abbas Haji Kenari at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Ali Reza Heydari at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Abbas Jadidi at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.

Kenari claimed his first World title with a 4-2 decision over win over Cary Kolat of the United States. The World Cup will offer an exciting re-match of this event with Kolat in the U.S. lineup at 138.75 pounds. Kenari, who competed in the 1996 Olympics, is the 1997 Asian champion.

Heydari, the 1997 World bronze medalist, is expected to challenge 1997 World champion Les Gutches of the U.S. for the individual title at 187.25 pounds. Heydari lost to Gutches 3-0 in overtime at the 1997 World Championships. Heydari is the 1997 Asian champion and is a 1996 World Cup bronze medalist.

In the 1996 Olympics, Jadidi lost a 1-1 overtime referees' decision to Kurt Angle of the United States in the 220 pound gold medal final. The Angle-Jadidi match was one of the most memorable events of the 1996 Olympics with an emotional Jadidi protesting as Angle dropped to his knees in celebration.

In February, Jadidi defeated 1993 World Champion Melvin Douglas of the U.S. in the finals of the Takhti Cup in Tehran.

Other top wrestlers for Iran include Gholam Reza Mohammadi at 54 kg/119 lbs. and 1997 Junior World champions Bahman Tayebi-Kermani at 54 kg/119 lbs., Ali Reza Dabier at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. and Majied Khodaee at 76 kg/167.5 lbs.

Mohammadi, a 1995 World silver medalist, placed sixth in the 1997 World Championships. He is a three-time Senior World medalist and placed fifth in the 1996 Olympic Games.

Rounding out the Iranian lineup is Massoud Jamshidi at 69 kg/152 lbs., P. Dorostkar at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., Davoud Ghanbari at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. and Ali Reza Rezaie at 130 kg/286 lbs.
