Cuba announces lineup for 1998 World Cup in Stillwater, Okla., April 4-5

1997 Pan American team champion Cuba has announced its lineup for the 1998 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling in Stillwater, Okla., April 4-5. 

In addition to Cuba, the 1998 World Cup will feature the United States, Russia, Iran, Germany and Japan. This annual freestyle dual meet championships is second only to the World Championships and Olympics in importance. Cuba placed third in the 1997 World Cup also held in Stillwater, Okla.

Leading the Cuban team will be 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia at 54 kg/119 lbs. and 1997 World silver medalist Alexis Rodriguez at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Garcia, the 1997 World Champion at 119 pounds, placed fourth in the 1997 World Cup. He has also claimed medals at three age-group World Championships. He claimed a bronze medal at the 1997 Junior World Championships to go with his 1995 Espoir World title and 1993 Cadet World bronze medal.

Rodriguez, who claimed silver medals in both the 1997 Junior and Senior World Championships, placed second in the 1997 World Cup. Rodriguez became an overnight sensation in the wrestling world when he scored a stunning victory over four-time Olympic medalist Bruce Baumgartner of the USA in last years' World Cup. Rodriguez has not finished lower than second in international competitions including titles in the 1996 Junior World Championships and the 1997 Pan American Championships.

1996 Olympians Yosmany Sanchez at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Wilfredo Morales at 97 kg/213.75 lbs. will also compete.

Sanchez, who placed fourth in the 1996 Olympic Games, is the defending World Cup champion and claimed a bronze medal at the 1996 World Cup. He is the 1995 Espoir World champion and earned a bronze medal in the 1992 Junior World Championships. In addition, he is the 1997 Pan American champion.

Morales, who placed ninth in the 1996 Olympic Games, finished fourth in the 1997 World Cup. He placed eighth in the 1997 World Championships and was the 1996 World Cup champion.

Rounding out the Cuban lineup is Yoendris Albear at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., Carlos Ortiz at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., and Leonardo Diaz at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. and Yoel Romero at 85 kg/187.25 lbs.

Albear, the 1997 Pan American champion, represented Cuba in the 1997 World Championships. He claimed a silver medal in the 1996 World Cup, his only appearance in this event.

Ortiz, a 1997 World Cup silver medalist, is a 1994 & 1997 Pan American champion.

Diaz, who placed second in the 1997 World Cup, placed ninth in the 1997 World Championships. He also is the 1997 Pan American champion.

Romero, who placed third in the 1997 World Cup, placed fifth in the 1997 World Championships. He also claimed a silver medal at the 1997 Junior World Championships.
