FIVE U.S. WRESTLERS QUALIFY FOR FINALS AT 1998 PAN AMERICAN FREESTYLE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WINNIPEG, CANADAFive U.S. wrestlers have qualified for the gold-medal finals at the 1998 Pan American Wrestling Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The five U.S. finalists include 1996 Olympian Lou Rosselli (Edinboro, Pa./NYAC) at 119 pounds, plus John Giura (New York, N.Y./Dave Schultz WC) at 152 pounds, Steve Marianetti (Champaign, Ill./New York AC) at 167.5 pounds, Dean Morrison (Morgantown, W. Va./NYAC) at 187.25 pounds and Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.
Rosselli won three matches to qualify for the finals, where he will face 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia of Cuba in the finals. Rosselli was a 1997 World Cup champion and a two-time U.S. Nationals champion at 114.5 pounds.
Giura scored a pair of decisions to make the finals, where he will battle Yosmany Sanchez of Cuba. Giura was seventh in the 1989 World Championships and is a two-time World Cup champion.
Marianetti also won two bouts on Friday, and will face Daniel Gonzales of Cuba in the gold-medal finals. He is currently ranked No. 3 in the USA at his weight class.
Morrison, also ranked No. 3 in the United States, scored a pair of technical fall victories in the preliminary rounds. His opponent in the finals will be Joel Romera of Cuba.
Thompson scored a technical fall in his only bout on Friday. He will face 1997 World silver medalist Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba in the championship bout. Thompson holds a No. 2 national ranking.
The other three U.S. wrestlers have suffered one loss, but are still eligible to qualify for the bronze medal match. They include Eric Albarracin (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, John Fisher (Ypsilanti, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 138.75 pounds and Joel Sharratt (Bethlehem, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 213.75 pounds.
National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Keith Mourlam of Atlanta, Ga. will lead the freestyle team.
Cuba had an outstanding day on Friday, qualifying all eight of their athletes for the gold-medal finals.
The 1998 Pan American Championships are being used as the qualifying tournament for the 1999 Pan American Games that will also be held in Winnipeg.
