RUSSIA DEFEATS USA, 21-14 IN WORLD DUAL MEET OF FREESTYLE WRESTLING IN WATERLOO, IOWA, APRIL 7The national team from Russia defeated a team of U.S. all-stars, 21-14, in a World Dual meet of freestyle wrestling in Waterloo, Iowa, April 7. Russia won six of the nine bouts in the dual meet.
Troy Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) claimed the first win for the United States, defeating Andrei Yakovlev, 3-1 at 138.75 pounds. Steiner was a 1992 NCAA champion for the Univ. of Iowa.
Daryl Weber (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC), a 1996 NCAA champion for the Univ. of Iowa, defeated Alexei Kasiev at 167.5 pounds, 3-2.
Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) scored an impressive 3-1 win over three-time World Cup champion Andrei Shumilin. Thompson, an NCAA champion at Nebraska, grew up in Janesville, Iowa. Thompson is ranked No. 2 in the United States.
Russia won two key matches by just one point. Shamil Umakhanov edged Mike Mena (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC), 4-3 at 127.75 pounds. Adam Saitiev edged Sean Bormet (Madison, Wis./Dave Schultz WC), 7-6 at 167.5 pounds.
Among the other Russian winners was 1997 World Champion Kouramagomed Kouramagomedov at 213.75 pounds.
The competition was held in the Young Arena. The event was filmed for a tape-delayed broadcast by USA Sports Productions, and will air of ESPN2 in June.
