Pat Smith (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) claimed the only victory for the U.S. in a 26-7 World Dual Meet loss to Cuba in Houston, April 7.The World Dual Meet was held in the Fonde Gymnasium in Houston. Cuba participated in the dual meet after placing fourth in the 1998 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling in Stillwater, Okla., April 4-5.
Smith scored a 4-3 decision over Daniel Gonzales of Cuba to claim the win at 167.5 pounds. Smith, the only four-time NCAA champion in history, is currently not ranked in the U.S. Gonzalez placed fifth in the 1998 World Cup.
Other matches included 1997 NCAA champion Teague Moore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Cowboy WC) of Oklahoma State Univ. losing a 9-3 decision to 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia of Cuba at 119 pounds.
Kerry Boumans of (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) lost a 5-2 decision to Joendris Albear at 127.75 pounds. Boumans is a Freestyle Resident Athlete at the United States Olympic Training Center. Albear, who placed fourth in the 1998 World Cup, represented Cuba in the 1997 World Championships.
Jared Frayer of Clearwater, Fla. lost a 4-1 decision to Carlos Ortiz at 138.75 pounds. Ortiz, who placed fifth in the 1998 World Cup, is a 1994 & 1997 Pan American champion.
1998 World Cup bronze medalist Yosmany Sanchez defeated Shawn Smith of Chippewa Falls, Wis., 11-2 at 152 pounds. Sanchez placed fourth in the 1996 Olympic Games. Smith is a sophomore at Oklahoma State Univ.
Byron Tucker of McKenney, Va. lost a 6-0 decision to Daniel Gonzales at 167.5 pounds. It was Gonzales second match of the evening after his 4-3 loss to Pat Smith. Tucker is a junior at the Univ. of Oklahoma.
Brian Picklo of Norman, Okla. lost a 3-0 decision to 1998 World Cup champion Yoel Romero at 187.25 pounds. Picklo is the Assistant Coach at Univ. of Oklahoma.
Orville Palmer of Middletown, Conn. was defeated 4-0 by 1998 World Cup bronze medalist Wilfredo Morales at 213.75 pounds. Palmer is a junior at the Univ. of Oklahoma . Morales, who placed ninth in the 1996 Olympic Games, finished eighth in the 1997 World Championships.
The U.S. team was coached by two-time Olympic champion and four-time World Champion John Smith of Stillwater, Okla.
