Greco-Roman champions crowned at Cadet World Team Trials, April 9

Greco-Roman champions were determined at the 1998 Cadet World Team Trials for men, held at Northwestern Univ. in Evanston, Ill., April 9. The top 14-16 year old wrestlers in the nation competed in the international styles.    

Champions qualify for the U.S. team that will compete at the 1998 Cadet World Greco-Roman Championships, held in Pretoria, South Africa on July 29-August 1. In addition, competitors will also be eligible for the World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia this summer.

Israel Martinez of Aurora, Ill., qualified for his second straight U.S. Cadet World team, after beating Jamell Tidwell of Bloomington, Minn, 9-6 at 114.5 pounds.

1997 Cadet Nationals champion Nathan Piasecki of Minocqua, Wis., won the 99-pound title, with an 8-5 win over Zach Lomano of Layton, Utah.

The state of Minnesota had three individual champions, Paul Carlson of Cedar, Minn. at 138.75 pounds, Nick Zajac of Hastings, Minn. at 167.5 pounds and Tim Kraemer of Cold Springs, Minn. at 182.5 pounds.

Other champions included Andy Simmons of Williamston, Mich, at 92.5 pounds, Jason Moreno of Firebaugh, Calif., at 105.5 pounds, Steven Garcia of Cypress, Calif. at 125.5 pounds, James Woodall of DuPont, Pa. at 152 pounds and Pat DeGain of White Lake, Mich. at 209.25 pounds.

Men's Cadet World Team Trials freestyle competition begins on Friday, April 10, with session times of 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and completes on Saturday, April 11, with session times of 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
