PIROZOLLA QUALIFIES FOR U.S. WORLD TEAM FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR AT 1998 CADET WORLD TEAM TRIALS AT NORTHWESTERN UNIV. IN EVANSTON, ILL., APRIL 11Mike Pirozolla of Levittown, Pa. won the gold medal at 138.75 pounds, making the U.S. freestyle team for the second straight year at the 1998 Cadet World Team Trials for men, held at Northwestern Univ. in Evanston, Ill., April 10-11. The top 14-16 year old wrestlers in the nation competed in the international styles.
Champions qualify for the U.S. team that will compete at the 1998 Cadet World Freestyle Championhips in Manchester, England, July 2-5. In addition, competitors will also be eligible for the World Youth Games in Moscow, Russia this summer.
Pirozolla beat Aric Hicklin of Fremont, Calif., 3-0 at 138.75 pounds. Pirozolla was a member of the 1997 U.S. Cadet World Team at 138.75 pounds.
Two wrestlers claimed double titles, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions at the Cadet World Team Trials: James Woodall of DuPont, Pa. at 152 pounds and Pat DeGain of White Lake, Mich. at 209.25 pounds.
Woodall beat Jake Rosholt of Sandpoint, Idaho, 14-5 in the finals. DeGain pinned Matt Hasbrook of Indianapolis, Ind., in 1:57 to claim the title.
Woodall and DeGain will have to select either freestyle or Greco-Roman for the World Championships. The runner-up in the other style will then qualify for the U.S. team.
In a rematch of the Greco-Roman finals, Justin Millard of Bellefont, Pa., beat Nick Zajac of Hastings, Minn., 11-3 at 167.5 pounds. Zajac had pinned Millard in the Greco-Roman finals on Thurday night.
Other champions included Ruben Villorreal of Plano, Ill. at 92.5 pounds, Nathan Schy of Hampton, Va., at 99 pounds, Kyle Ott of Huber Heights, Ohio, at 105.5 pounds, Rich Cordova of Ogden, Utah at 114.5 pounds, Marcus Levesseur of Minneapolis, Minn., at 125.5 pounds and Karl Knothe of Stillwater, Minn. at 187.75 pounds
