TINA GEORGE NAMED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER AT 1998 WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NORTHWESTERN UNIV. IN EVANSTON, ILL., APRIL 11Tina George (Morris, Minn./UM-Morris) claimed the 123.25-pound title, and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1998 Women's University National Championships at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., April 11.
It was the first time that a women's division has been held alongside the menÕs University National Championships. The competition featured many of the best women wrestlers in the nation, including many top athletes on the college level.
George won three matches on the way to the title, including an 8-4 decision over Sara McMann (Marion, N.C./Strong and Courageous). George also scored a fall and a technical fall in the tournament.
Two-time World silver medalist Kristie Stenglein (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) claimed the gold medal at 75 kg/165.25 pounds, scoring pins over both of her opponents. Stenglein pinned runner-up Dominque Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/UM-Morris) in 2:35.
In a battle of Team USA members, Jimi Dawn Hornbuckle (Poteau, Okla./Dave Schultz WC) edged Kristy Jeffrey (Deland, Fla./UM-Morris), 8-6. Hornbuckle is ranked No. 2 in the nation at 136.5 pounds, while Jeffrey holds a No. 3 national ranking at 149.75 pounds.
The University of Minnesota-Morris won the team title, with 88 team points and four individual champions. The Minnesota Storm placed second with eight points.
Joining George on the championship podium were UM-Morris team members Angela Hesener (Ann Arbor, Mich./UM-Morris) at 101.25 pounds, Aimee McNab (Morris, Minn./UM-Morris) at 112.25 pounds and Satrinina Vernon (Rodeo, Calif./UM-Morris) at 149.75 pounds.
Hesener defeated DaniellaHobelka (Cambridge, Mass./Harvard) in two straight matches, 11-1 and 7-0.
McNab scored a 10-0 technical fall over Janelle Curtis (Galesburg, Ill.) in the championship finals.
Vernon won two bouts for the title, including a 10-0 technical fall over runner-up Lisa Bethke (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan).
The Most Falls Award went to Cassie Inman of UM-Morris, with two falls in 1:23.
