Bono wins third straight freestyle title at University Nationals, April 11

BONO WINS THIRD STRAIGHT FREESTYLE TITLE, AND ESPOSITO CLAIMS DOUBLE TITLE AT 1998 UNIVERSITY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NORTHWESTERN UNIV. IN EVANSTON, ILL., APRIL 10-11 

Chris Bono (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won a gold medal for the third straight year at the University National Freestyle Wrestling Championships, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., April 10-11.

Bono claimed the 152-pound title, stopping Kirk White (Boise, Idaho/Boise State) in the finals, 9-0. Bono has been named Outstanding Wrestler at the University Nationals in freestyle for three straight years (1996-98).

Anthony Esposito (Roselle, Ill./Armed Forces-Marines) won a double title, claiming both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions at the 1998 University Nationals. In the freestyle finals, Esposito edged Zachary Thompson (Ames, Iowa/Cyclone WC) 2-1, in overtime.

In addition to the freestyle title, Esposito has won three career University National Greco-Roman titles. He lives in nearby Roselle, after leaving the Marine Corps over a year ago.

Two athletes claimed their second career University National freestyle titles, Danny Felix (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds and Airron Richardson (Toledo, Ohio/Cliff Keen WC) at 286 pounds. Both were also University National champions in 1996. Felix attends Arizona State, and Richardson attends the Univ. of Michigan

Felix defeated Dane Valdez (Norman, Okla./Team Excel) in the finals, 6-0. Richardson edged J.R. Plienis (Edgemere, Md./Husker WC), 4-0 in overtime to win his title.

Claiming a gold medal at 119 pounds was Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids), with an 8-0 decision over Jason Silverstein (W. Lafayette, Ind./Purdue WC). Abas attends Fresno State Univ.

Winning the title at 187.25 pounds was John Kading (Evanston, Ill./Wildcat WC), who beat Brian Picklo (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids), 5-3. Kading, a 1996 NCAA champion for the Univ. of Oklahoma, is an assistant coach at host Northwestern Univ.

Other champions were Donald Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Armed Forces-Army) at 110 pounds, Jeremy Ensrud (Eugene, Ore./Club Oregon) at 167.75 pounds and Kole Clauson (Madison, Wis./Wisconsin WC) at 167.5 pounds.

This major event featured the top 18-24 year-old male wrestlers in the nation, competing in the Olympic styles. Many of the athletes on the University age level have also been successful on the Senior level, and are considered top Olympic prospects.

The Sunkist Kids won the team title, followed by the Cyclone Wrestling Club.
