Dan Chandler of Minneapolis, Minn., has been named 1997 Greco-Roman Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling. This is the third time in the last four years that Chandler has received this prestigious award.Chandler served as the the head coach of the 1997 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, which placed 12th in the team standings in Wroclaw, Poland.
He was also head coach for the 1995 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, which placed in a tie for fourth in the 1995 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. It was the best finish for a U.S. team since 1979. Chandler coached two medalists for the United States, gold medalist Dennis Hall and bronze medalist Matt Ghaffari.
Chandler works as the state coach for the Minnesota/USA Wrestling, Inc., working with top wrestlers in the state on many age levels. He coaches the Minnesota Storm club, which includes many of the top Greco-Roman wrestlers in the nation.
In 1997, the Minnesota Storm placed third in the U.S. Greco-Roman Nationals in Div. II, and was second at both the University Nationals and Espoir Nationals.
Chandler was the assistant coach for the 1992 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team, which featured two medalists and placed in a tie for third in the unofficial team standings in Barcelona, Spain. He also was on the coaching staff of the 1988 and 1996 U.S. Olympic Teams.
He served as the head coach of the 1994 Pan American Championships team in Mexico City, Mexico, which won the first team title at the event in U.S. history. He also served as head coach for the 1990 World Cup team, which was third in the standings, and 1993 World Cup squad, which placed fifth.
He was an assistant coach with the 1989 and 1991 U.S. World Teams, and was an assistant coach with the 1985 Pan American Championships team.
As an athlete, Chandler was a member of three U.S. Olympic teams (1976, 1980, 1984). He is one of just two U.S. Greco-Roman athletes to medal in three Pan American Games, including gold medals in 1975 and 1979. He competed on six U.S. World Teams, placing fifth in the 1979 World Championships and sixth in 1977 and 1978. Chandler won 11 national Greco-Roman titles. He competed for the Univ. of Minnesota.
He has experience coaching on the college level, serving stints as head coach at the College of St. Thomas and as an assistant at the University of Minnesota.
