USA DEFEATS RUSSIA, 23-6, IN A FREESTYLE WORLD DUAL MEET IN BISMARCK, N.D., MAY 11 

The United States defeated Russia, 23-6, in a World Dual Meet of freestyle wrestling at Mandan High School in Bismarck, N.D., May 11. The United States won seven of the eight bouts in the dual meet.

Leading the U.S. team were Bismarck, N.D. natives Troy and Terry Steiner, twin brothers who attended Bismarck Century High School.

Both brothers placed second in the 1998 U.S. National Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., April 25-26. Both brothers work as assistant wrestling coaches for the Univ. of Wisconsin.

Troy Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) defeated Jamso Lkhmajanov, 10-1 at 138.75 pounds.

Terry Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) stopped Artour Tavkaozakhove, 5-3, at 152 pounds.

Among the U.S. winners were Chad Renner (Bismarck, N.D./Sunkist Kids), who defeated Akmed Arsamakov, 3-1. Renner also attended Bismarck Century High School.

1996 U.S. Olympian Lou Rosselli (Edinboro, Pa./NYAC) defeated veteran Maxim Molonov, in a 2-0 overtime decision at 119 pounds.

1998 U.S. National champion Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) scored a 2-0 overtime win over Artem Achigev at 286 pounds.

Joel Sharratt (Bethlehem, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) won by disqualification over Nikolai Telegin at 213.75 pounds.

Brandon Eggum (Sidney, Mont./Minnesota Storm) beat Roustem Soupaev, 6-0 at 187.75 pounds. Eggum attends the Univ. of Minnesota.

The U.S. team will be led by head coach J. Robinson of Minneapolis, Minn. Marty Morgan of Minneapolis, Minn. will serve as assistant coach. Robinson is the head coach of the University of Minnesota wrestling program. Morgan serves as an assistant coach with the Golden Gophers.

Russian athletes won a pair of exhibition bouts against athletes who grew up in North Dakota.
