U.S. TO BATTLE KOREA IN GRECO-ROMAN WRESTLING IN THE NATIONS CUP DUAL MEET IN SEOUL, KOREA, MAY 16
A team of top U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers will travel to Seoul, Korea, to compete against the national team from Korea in a dual meet, as part of the newly created "Nations Cup" tournament. The match will be held on Saturday, May 16.
This new event is also known as the 1998 Greco-Roman World Team Championships. It features eight of the best wrestling nations in the world. In an eight team bracket, the teams are conducting a "home-and-away" series to determine which team moves on to the next round.
In their first match of the series, the United States defeated Korea, 20-10, on May 2 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The results from the dual meet in Seoul will be combined with the Colorado Springs event, to determine which team wins the series.
The nations can enter different athletes at each of the dual meets. The winner of the U.S. vs. Korea dual series will face the winner of the Turkey vs. Ukraine first-round dual-series. The other nations in the competition are Hungary, Poland, Russia and Belarus.
Four of the U.S. athletes that competed in Colorado Springs will also travel to Seoul to represent the United States. They include Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 119 pounds, Kevin Bracken (Dekalb, Ill./New York AC) at 138.75 pounds, Quincey Clark (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 187.25 pounds and Rulon Gardner (Gilbert, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds. Sheldon, Bracken and Gardner all won their matches in Colorado Springs.
Sheldon was a member of the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic teams and placed second in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Sheldon has won nine U.S. national titles.
Bracken was the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion, and is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. He won a gold medal at the 1996 World Cup.
Clark holds a No. 3 national ranking in his weight class.
Gardner placed fifth in the 1997 World Championships, and was named USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year. A two-time national champion, Gardner was also a 1996 World Cup champion.
Rounding out the U.S. lineup are Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marines) at 138.75 pounds, Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 152 pounds, Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds and Jason Klohs (Osseo, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 213.75 pounds.
