KOREA BEATS USA, 36-22, IN GRECO-ROMAN WRESTLING IN NATIONS CUP DUAL MEET IN SEOUL, KOREA, MAY 16; KOREA WINS FIRST ROUND SERIES BY 46-42 MARGIN

Korea defeated the United States, 36-22, in a Greco-Roman dual meet in Seoul, Korea, May 16, as part of the first-round of the newly created "Nations Cup" tournament. This new event is also known as the 1998 Greco-Roman World Team Championships. In their first match of the "home-and-away" series, the United States defeated Korea, 20-10, on May 2 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Combining the scores of the two dual meets, Korea wins the first-round series, 46-42, and moves on to the semifinal round. Korea will face the winner of the Turkey vs. Ukraine first-round dual-series, which completes this weekend. The Nations Cup includes eight of the best wrestling nations in the world. In an eight team bracket, the teams are conducting "home-and-away" series to determine which teams move on to the next round. The other four nations in the competition are Hungary, Poland, Russia and Belarus. Korea won nine of the 15 matches held in the dual match in Seoul. In a format change from the dual in Colorado Springs, Colo., the teams competed through the lineup twice. Three U.S. wrestlers won both of their matches in the dual meet: Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds, Quincey Clark (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 187.25 pounds and Rulon Gardner (Gilbert, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds. Lindland defeated Cha Myung-Shin twice, 6-1 and 6-4. Lindland is top-ranked in the United States, and competed on the 1997 U.S. World Team. A two-time U.S. Nationals champion, he also won a 1996 World Cup title. Clark beat Park Myung-Suk two times, 5-1 and 7-1. Clark holds a No. 3 national ranking in his weight class. Gardner swept his two bouts against Yang Young-Jin, 7-3 and 7-1. Gardner placed fifth in the 1997 World Championships, and was named USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year. A two-time national champion, Gardner was also a 1996 World Cup champion. The key match-up in the meet came at 119 pounds, where two-time Olympian Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) faced 1996 Olympic Champion Sim Kwon-Ho. In Colorado Springs, Sheldon pinned Sim in overtime, sparking the U.S. to a team victory. In Seoul, Kim won both matches, stopping Sheldon 4-0 and 3-2 in overtime. Korea¹s other top wrestler, 1997 World Champion Son Sang-Pil, scored a pair of technical fall wins over Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 152 pounds. The U.S. team was led by head coach Rich Estrella of Colorado Springs, Colo., and National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo.
