for immediate release: May 21, 1998A team of U.S. Greco-Roman athletes defeated a team of Japanese national wrestlers 26-12 in a World Dual meet, held in Concord, Calif., May 20.
The dual meet was held prior to the 1998 Concord Cup, an annual Greco-Roman international tournament, that will be held at Mt. Diablo Valley High School in Concord, Calif., May 22-24.
The U.S. team was led by 1998 National champion Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds
Lindland scored a 1-0 overtime decision over Takamitsu Katayama at 167.5 pounds. Katayama is the 1997 Asian champion.
Other top performers included James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, Kevin Bracken (DeKalb, Ill./New York AC) at 138.75 pounds Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 152 pounds. All three wrestlers are ranked second in the nation.
Gruenwald, the 1998 Pan American champion, scored a 7-2 decision over Makoto Sasamoto at 138.75 pounds. Sasamoto placed eighth in the 1995 Concord Cup.
Bracken, a 1996 World Cup champion, scored a pin over Teto Nishida at 138.75 pounds. Nishida is a member of the Japanese national team.
Ellsworth, a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete, pinned Masaki Kubo at 152 pounds to give the U.S. a commanding lead in the dual.
The U.S. also received wins from Joe Warren (Ann Arbor, Mich./Michigan WC) at 127.75 pounds, Marco Sanchez at 138.75 pounds and Curt Onstead (Quantico, Va./Marines) at 138.75 pounds.
