NINE U.S. WRESTLERS WIN THEIR BOUTS AT GOLD MEDAL CHALLENGE OF GRECO-ROMAN WRESTLING IN CONCORD, CALIF., MAY 21 

Nine U.S. wrestlers won matches in the Gold Medal Challenge at the Concord Hilton in Concord, Calif., May 21. The event featured a card of 11 bouts between international Greco-Roman wrestling stars.

At 119 pounds, two-time Olympian Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) defeated 1995 World silver medalist Hiroshi Kado of Japan, 3-0, in overtime at 6:13. Sheldon was second in the 1991 World Championships.

Jeff Cervone (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) followed with an 11-1 technical fall over Juan Cortez of Mexico at 119 pounds. Cervone, a 1998 Armed Forces champion, was second in 1998 U.S. Nationals.

1998 Pan American champion Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated 1997 European silver medalist Djamel Aianoui of France, 7-1 at 127.75 pounds.

1996 World Cup champion Kevin Bracken (Dekalb, Ill./New York AC) stopped Thierry Bastien of France, 6-1 at 138.75 pounds.

Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) scored a come-from-behind 4-3 decision over Teito Nishida of Japan at 138.75 pounds.

Two-time U.S. Nationals champion Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) defeated Christian Eyer of France, 3-0 in overtime at 5:23 at 152 pounds. Eyer was sixth in the 1997 World Championships.

Two-time U.S. Nationals champion Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) scored an impressive 11-0 technical fall over Rudolpho Hernandez of Mexico in 3:09 at 167.5 pounds.

T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) stopped 1997 Asian champion Takamitsu Katayama of Japan, 3-2 at 167.5 pounds. Dantzler was second in the 1998 U.S. Nationals. 1998 U.S. Nationals champion Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated Hideakazu Yokoyama of Japan, 3-0 at 187.25 pounds.

All of these athletes will compete in the 1998 Concord Cup International, which will be held at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord, Calif. May 23-24. The Concord Cup is the top international Greco-Roman tournament held each year in the United States.
