COZART, SEAY, CORSO AMONG CHAMPIONS AT VETERANS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 

Adult wrestlers from across the nation came to Waterloo, Iowa to compete in the 1998 Veterans National Championships at Young Arena. Athletes 35-years old and above competed for national titles in four age divisions.

Russ Cozart (Brandon, Fla.) defended his Veterans National title and was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament. He claimed the Division B (42-48 years old) title at 150 pounds, scoring a 10-0 technical fall over Paul Hermann (York, Pa./Team Taz), in 1:06. Cozart also scored a fall in the semifinals. He is the most successful Veterans wrestler in U.S. history, with three career gold medals at the Veterans World Championships.

"I have a blast at this tournament,+ said Cozart. "Sometimes, getting in shape is tough, but wrestling is wrestling. I really enjoy doing this."

Winning a second straight Veterans Nationals title was 1996 U.S. Olympic team head coach Joe Seay (Perry, Okla./Sunkist Kids), who won the Division D (56 and over) title at 185 pounds. Seay pinned Sonny Boyd (Roanoke, Va.) in the finals in 42 seconds.

1976 Olympic team member Joe Corso (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) claimed the gold medal at 132 pounds in Div. B (42-48 years old). He pinned Ron Engle (St. Helena, Calif./St. Helena WC) in 3:06 in the finals. Corso was a Veterans World Champion in 1993.

Claiming titles for the second straight year in Div. C were Donald Apodaca of Huntington Beach, Calif. (Golden West) at 185 pounds and Joe Reasbeck of Superior, Wis. at 203 pounds. Winning for the second straight year in Div. B (42-48 years old) was Ron Cole (Auburn, Wash./Team Rhino).

Among the Div. A champions (35-41 years) were Scott Naylor (Dallastown, Pa./Advantage) at 132 pounds, Dave Mills (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills WC) at 150 pounds, Russ Schenk (Holiday, Fla.) at 168 pounds, Brad Swartz (Auburn, Wash./Team Rhino) at 185 pounds, Mike Braun (Omaha, Neb.) at 203 pounds and Timothy Rock (Howell, N.J./Howell WC) at 286 pounds.

Among the champions in Div. C (49-55 years) were Robert Hernandez (Tulare, Calif.) at 150 pounds and Paul Stull (LeMoyne, Pa./Central PA WC) at 286 pounds. Lawrence Brown (Denver, Colo.) was the Div. D (56 and over) champion at 150 pounds.
