Tomeo and Van Dusen claim third straight Cadet Women's National titles in M

Erin Tomeo of Volant, Pa., and Marcie Van Dusen of Twin Peaks, Calif. won gold medals for the third staright year at the 1998 Cadet Women's National Championships, held in Metairie, La., June 20.

Six 1997 Cadet National champions successfully defended their titles, with Tomeo and Van Dusen the only three time winners.

Tomeo claimed her third national title with a 3-0 decision over Devin Kelly of Pennsylvania at 108 pounds. Tomeo was the 101 pound champion in 1997. Tomeo as named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Van Dusen stretched her national count to three with a convincing 11-0 technical fall over Brandi Rosenbrock of Michigan to win the 123 pound title.

Other defensing champions included Jennifer Cycon of Stamford, Conn. at 88 pounds, Micah Kelly of Mercer, Pa. at 94 pounds, Katrina Betts of Milan, Mich at 114 pounds, Melanie Macari of Fremont, Calif. at 143 pounds and Alicia Mena of St. Paul, Minn. at 154+ pounds.

Cycon registered a pin in just 46 seconds over Melissa Moore of California to claim the title at 88 pounds. Cycon was the 83 pound champion in 1997.

Kelly claimed her second title with a 27 second pin over Katie Jordan of New York at 94 pounds. Jordan was ranked fourth in the nation. Kelly earned the Most Falls Award for the tournament.

Betts claimed the 114 pound title with a 6-3 decision over Lisa Bisers of Pennsylvania. In May, Betts claimed first place in the Senior division of the Saunders Cup and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Macari won her second national title with a 3-0 decision over Jessica Martin of Michigan at 143 pounds. Macari is also ranked fifth in the new FILA Jr. WomenÆs Division.

Mena, the 1998 Saunders Cup champion, scored a pin in 1:49 to defeat Sara DiCesare of Michigan for her second straight national title.

Athletes claiming their first Cadet Women's national title were Mary Kelly of Mercer, Pa. at 83 pounds, Brooke Bogren of Kansas at 101 pounds, Rosario Decola of Michigan at 132 pounds and Jessica Bartley of Michigan at 154 pounds.

The 1998 Cadet Women's Nationals were held in the New Orleans area for the third staright year. The event was held in conjunction with the 1998 Junior Women's Nationals and the International Junior Freestyle Festival for men.
