Two-time World silver medalist Kristie Stenglein (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) claimed the 165.25 title at the inaugural 1998 FILA Junior WomenÆs National Championships, held in Metairie, La., June 19-20.
The inaugural FILA Junior Women's National Championships featured many of the best 16-20 years old athletes in the nation. The winners of this event will also qualify to represent the United States at the Women's FILA Junior World Championships in Fredrikstad, Norway, August 7-9.
Stenglein, a three-time U.S. National champion on the senior-level, scored a 7-0 decision over Satrinina Vernon at 165.25 pounds. Vernon placed second in the 1998 Senior U.S. Nationals at 149.75 pounds.
Other top champions included Cheryl Meyer (Concordia, Kan./Team Kansas) at 127.75 pounds, Cassie Inman (Rochelle, Ill./UM-Morris) at 138.75 pounds and Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/UM-Morris) at 165+ pounds.
Meyer, who placed fourth in the 1998 U.S. Senior Nationals, scored a 11-9 decision over 1998 Cadet Nationals champion Marcie Van Dusen (Twin Peaks, Calif./Rim/Outlaws) to claim the 127.75 pound title. Meyer, a 1992 Senior U.S. Nationals champion, was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Inman, who placed eighth in the 1998 Senior U.S. Nationals, claimed her first national title with a pin over Amy Wahle (Neola, Iowa) in 3:16. Inman placed third in the 1998 University Nationals. Wahle was a 1997 Cadet Nationals champion.
Smalley, who placed third in the 1998 U.S. Nationals, also claimed her first national title with a pin over Angelica Espinosa of Texas in 1:31. Smalley, who is ranked second in the nation on the Senior level, placed third in the 1997 Senior U.S. Nationals.
1998 Cadet WomenÆs National champion Erin Tomeo (Mercer, Pa.) claimed her second title of the weekend with a 11-1 technical fall over Jenny Wong (Woodbury, Minn.) at 110 pounds. Tomeo is a three-time Cadet National champion.
Other champions included Thisbe Reardon winning uncontested at 94.75 pounds, Olivia Ocampo of California at 101.25 pounds, Katrina Betts at 119 pounds and Kaci Lyle of California, uncontested at 149.75 pounds.
The Most Falls Award went to Danielle Bennett of Fulton, New York who registered five falls in 6:24.
The tournament was held alongside the 1998 Cadet Women's National Championships and the New Orleans International Junior Freestyle Festival, featuring top high school-age athletes from around the United States and foreign nations.
