REPEAT FIRST TEAM SELECTIONS T.J. HILL AND GARRETT LOWNEY TOP 1998 ASICS TIGER HIGH SCHOOL ALL-AMERICAN TEAM

Repeat First Team selections T.J. Hill (Farmington, Mo./Farmington HS) at 119 pounds and Garrett Lowney (Freedom, Wis./Freedom HS) at 119 pounds headline the 13th annual Asics Tiger High School All-American Team.

The Asics Tiger All-American Team is selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, and is considered the top honor in high school wrestling. It is the only national all-star team for which high school wrestlers competing on all four grade levels are eligible. Asics Tiger is the title sponsor of USA Wrestling¹s Junior National Championships and a major supporter of wrestling at all levels.

³This team represents the best of the best in our high schools today,² said Neil Duncan of TW Promotions. ³We are proud to recognize the talent and work ethic of these outstanding young men. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.²

Members of the First Team, as well as the Asics Tiger Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the Asics Tiger National Junior Championships, July 25 at Fargo, N.D.

This year¹s First Team members combined to post record-setting numbers - 43 state titles and 15 Junior National titles.

Hill is a four-time state champion, and has won five Junior National titles. He could break the existing record of six Junior National titles with a double championship this summer. He owns 10 career age-group national titles, and would break the national record of 11 with a Junior National double title this summer. He becomes only the second three-time Asics Tiger First Team member, joining Jeremy Hunter of Pennsylvania (1995-97).

Lowney, a three-time high school state champion, was a double champion at the 1997 Asics Tiger Junior Nationals. Two other First Teamers won double titles last summer: Jason Powell (Choctaw HS, Choctaw, OK) at 103 pounds and Justin Ruiz (Taylorsville HS, Salt Lake City UT) at 189 pounds. Powell and Lowney are both three-time state champions.

Other First Team members who won Junior National Greco-Roman titles last year were Eric Larkin (Sunnyside HS/Tucson, AZ) at 140 pounds and David Miller (Kearney HS/Kearney, KS) at 145 pounds. Larkin won two state high school titles, while Miller was a three-time state champions.

Etu was a Cadet World Greco-Roman champion last year, and claimed a double title at the Cadet Nationals.

The Second and Third Teams are not far behind the First Team. The Second Team, led by four-time state champion Bo Maynes (Salina South HS/Salina, KS) at 125 pounds, combined for 35 state titles and three Junior National titles.

The Third Team is one of the deepest ever, led by five-time state champion Hannon Hisek (Bon Homme HS/Tyndall, SD) at 135 pounds, plus four-time state champions Witt Durden (Dublin, HS/Dublin, GA) at 119 pounds and Jeff Henning (Tuttle HS/Tuttle, OK) at 171 pounds. The Third Team combined for 33 state titles.
