Olympians Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) and Matt Ghaffari (Avon Lake, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) led the list of champions at the 1998 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Metairie, La., June 27. The winners will represent the United States at the 1998 Greco-Roman World Championships, Aug. 27-30 in Gavle, Sweden.Sheldon, a 1991 world silver medalist, earned his first berth on the U.S. World Team since 1995 with two tough wins over Broderick Lee (Tarzana, Calif./Peninsula) at 119 pounds. In the first match Sheldon claimed a 1-1 overtime referees decision. Match two was forced into a second overtime period when both wrestlers were unable to score and all criteria was tied after the first overtime period. In the second extra period, Sheldon gained position and scored a takedown to end the match.
"It's great to be back on top," said Sheldon. "Brandon Paulson beat me in 1996 and Broderick beat me in 1997. I'm looking forward to going back to the World Championships and earning a medal."
Ghaffari, the 1996 Olympic silver medalist, defeated Billy Pierce (Minneapolis, Minn./Minn. Storm) in two straight matches to earn a spot on his first U.S. World Team since the 1996 Olympics. Ghaffari, the 1995 World bronze medalist, was pushed into overtime in the first match winning a 2-0 referees decision. In match two Ghaffari was able to control Pierce on the mat turning him on two occasions for the 3-0 win.
"Before my injury I was the top guy in the U.S.," said Ghaffari. "I haven't lost to an American since 1990 and I feel good going to the Worlds in August. For the past two months I have been training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. and I am seeing results. My goal is to beat the Russian (Three-time Olympic Champion Alexander Karelin) before he retires."
Earning spots on their second consecutive World Team was Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 152 pounds and Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds.
Saba, the 1998 Nationals champion, defeated 1996 Olympian David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minn. Storm) in three matches to return to the World Championships. After losing the first match in double overtime, Saba fought back to win the second match in another tight double overtime match. In the deciding match Saba scored in regulation and held on through the extra period to win the series.
"I am pretty relieved right now," said Saba. "Zuniga is a real admirable competitor. This was a real tough series and I'm happy I won. I am looking forward to the Worlds now."
Lindland, a two-time Nationals champion, defeated 1996 U.S. Olympic Team alternate Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./Armed Forces-Army) in two straight matches at 167.5 pounds. Lindland controlled the first match winning 11-2. In the second match Sieracki kept it close but eventually lost 3-2.
"I am real happy to make my second World Team," said Lindland. "Last year I didn't have the type of tournament I wanted at Worlds. I have learned a lot from my experiences and look forward to this year."
Making his first U.S. World Team since 1993 was Shon Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 138.75 pounds. Lewis, the 1998 Nationals champion defeated Kevin Bracken (DeKalb, Ill./NYAC) in two straight matches. The series was a re-match of the 1998 Nationals final. Lewis claimed the first match in a 3-1 overtime decision. In match two Lewis scored a 4-0 decision.
Making their first U.S. World Team was Quincey Clark (Eagan, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 187.25 pounds and Jason Klohs (Laramie, Wyo./Minn. Storm) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.
Klohs, the 1998 U.S. Nationals champion, scored two straight wins over Dan Hicks (Fredricksburg, Va./Armed Force-Marines) to earn the right to compete at the World Championships. In the first match Klohs used a three-point throw to gain the edge in a 4-2 win. Match two was pushed into double overtime before Klohs scored a takedown to end the match.
"This is just another step for me towards being the best," said Klohs. "My coaches keep telling me that I can do it and I want to keep going and see how I can do on the World level."
Clark, who placed sixth at the 1998 U.S. Nationals, defeated National Champion Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in three matches at 187.25 pounds.
Clark won the first match in a 2-1 overtime decision. In match two, Niebuhr scored a 4-3 decision to force the third and deciding match. In a tough third match, Clark scored in a flurry to make it 6-2 then registered the pin second later.
"It was a real tough series," said Clark. "I am just thankful for my success today. I still have alot of work to do before I'll be ready for the world level. I am going to have to train real hard to get ready for the Worlds in August."
At 138.75 pounds, James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./Armed Forces-Marines) in two straight matches to earn the right to compete in a special wrestle-off with 1998 Nationals champion Dennis Hill (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids). Gruenwald earned the top seed in the tournament when Hall received a medical delay due to injury. The wrestle-off will be held at a later date.
