OKLAHOMA WINS JUNIOR NATIONAL FREESTYLE DUALS; OHIO PLACES SECOND AND CALIFORNIA TAKES THIRD

Oklahoma claimed the team title in the 1998 Junior National Freestyle Duals, held in Edmond, Okla., June 27-28. This is a major national dual meet competition, featuring high school athletes representing state-level teams.

In the championship finals, Oklahoma defeated Ohio 26-22, winning six of the 12 matches. The key for Oklahoma was getting three falls and a technical fall in the bout, while Ohio only had one fall. Scoring falls in the finals for Oklahoma were Jason Powell (110.5), Jerrod Sanders (137) and Andy Andrade (183).

Oklahoma defended its freestyle team title, which it won in 1997 over New York in Edwardsville, Ill.

California claimed third place with a 28-22 win over New Jersey. California had won the team title in the Greco-Roman division, held June 23-24.

The Minnesota Tornado placed fifth, stopping Illinois 24-23. The seventh place match went to the Iowa Corn, which stopped North Dakota 32-17.

Winning the consolation bracket was Kansas Gold, which defeated Missouri I, 30-21 in the finals bout. A total of 26 teams entered the tournament this year.
