For immediate release, June 29, 1998USA Wrestling has named Ike Anderson of Albany, N.Y. as its new Greco-Roman Developmental Coach.
USA Wrestling is the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the international wrestling federation (FILA).
Anderson has been a world-class Greco-Roman athlete, and has been an active Greco-Roman coach on the national and club level with USA Wrestling.
"We look forward to having Ike Anderson serving as Greco-Roman Developmental Coach," said Mitch Hull, National Teams Director for USA Wrestling. "He excelled for USA Wrestling as an athlete. Immediately upon his retirement, he helped as a volunteer national coach. He understands the position and will certainly do an excellent job for us. He will also assist with the coaching of athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center."
Anderson placed sixth in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, competing at 136.5 pounds. He won a silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba, and won three career medals at the Greco-Roman World Cup. Anderson won three U.S. National Greco-Roman titles, and was a national runner-up four times.
Anderson has coached a number of U.S. international teams, including serving as head coach of the 1995 Pan American Championships team in Cali, Colombia. He also has served as an assistant coach on U.S. tour teams to Europe and Cuba. Anderson was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team coaching staff.
He has a club coach with the New York Athletic Club and the Adirondack Three-Style Wrestling Association, working with a number of national-caliber athletes. In addition, he served assistant coaching stints at the State Univ. of New York at Albany and at Appalachian State Univ.
Anderson operates a successful landscape maintaince company in the Albany area. He also has experience in the fitness industry. Anderson has worked as a personal trainer since 1988. He served three years as a fitness director at the Fort Orange Club in Albany. He was also a fitness consultant and sales representative with United Sports and Fitness and a supervisor of the fitness center at the YMCA in Albany.
Anderson attended Appalachian State Univ. in Boone, N.C., where he was a star on the wrestling team. He received degrees in recreation and in physical education there. He attended Lower Richland High School in South Carolina, where he was a state champion in 1975.
Anderson will be working in USA Wrestling's National Teams Department. He will be responsible for the development of age-group Greco-Roman wrestlers in the United States. In addition, he will assist with the U.S. Olympic Training Center Greco-Roman resident program, working with National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser and Greco-Roman Resident Coach Anatoly Petrosyan.
