CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT USA WRESTLING KIDS NATIONAL GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WATERLOO, IOWA, JULY 2Top young athletes from around the nation claimed national titles at the 1998 Kids National Greco-Roman Championships, held at the Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, July 1-2.
The best young athletes between the ages of 9-14 have arrived in Waterloo, the hometown of wrestling legend Dan Gable. This is the second straight year that the event is being hosted in Waterloo.
A total of 434 athletes entered the Greco-Roman tournament this year, representing 39 states. Competition was held in three age levels: Midget (9-10 years), Novice (11-12 years) and Schoolboy (13-14).
A total of 12 wrestlers remain eligible for the most prestigious award in Kids wrestling, the USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown. An athlete must win all three USA Wrestling national titles in one year - folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman.
The following wrestlers have won the first two legs of this award, by claiming national folkstyle and Greco-Roman titles so far this year:
In the Midget Division: Jimmy Waters of Council Bluffs, Iowa (Midget 80), Riley Lindner of Fort Dodge, Iowa (Midget 100) and Anthony Morales of Las Vegas, Nev. (Midget 120)
In the Novice Division: Eric Coney of North Miami, Fla (Novice 85), Mark Friend of Libertyville, Ill. (Novice 90), Blake Eckstein of Elgin, Ore. (Novice 150) and Alex Cornette of Green Bay, Wis. (Novice 165+)
In the Schoolboy Division: C.P. Schlatter of Westerville, Ohio (105 Schoolboy 105), Johnny Galloway of Waterloo, Iowa (Schoolboy 130), Daniel Bedoy of Whiting, Ind. (Schoolboy 145), Jeremy Hart of Berne, Ind. (Schoolboy 155) and Josh Reindl of Northwood, Iowa (Schoolboy 175++)
In 1997, only two wrestlers won the prestigious Kids Triple Crown - Jon Dahl of Minnesota and Beau DeArmon of Oklahoma.
Eight athletes won USA Wrestling Kids National titles for the second straight year: Michael Coleman of Omaha, Neb. (Midget 60), Jason Robbins of Oviedo, Fla. (Novice 75), Brandon Halsey of Oceanside, Calif. (Novice 95), Alex Cornette of Green Bay, Wis. (Novice 165+), Jon Dahl of Fridley, Minn. (Novice 115), Cody Grant of Torrington, Wyo. (Schoolboy 70), Rafael Chavez of Rock Springs, Wyo. (Schoolboy 75) and Willy Holst of Prescott, Wis. (Schoolboy 85).
Each of the competitors at the Kids National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships must have entered one of the five USA Wrestling Kids Regionals in order to attend this event. Admission to this year¹s Kids National Championships is free.
The freestyle tournament will be hosted on Friday and Saturday, with medals awarded on Saturday night.
The athletes will also attend a Waterloo Bucks baseball game on Friday, July 3. Olympic champion Dan Gable is scheduled to throw out the first pitch.
