MICAH KELLY WINS GOLD MEDAL AT WOMEN¹S CADET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS; U.S. WINS SIX MEDALS AND CLAIMS SECOND PLACE IN THE TEAM STANDINGS 

Micah Kelly of Mercer, Pa. claimed a gold medal at 94 pounds, leading the U.S. team to a second place finish at the 1998 Women¹s Cadet World Championships in Manchester, England, July 2-5.

This is the first year that FILA has hosted a Cadet World Championships for women, featuring the top 14-16 year old athletes in the world.

Kelly defeated Dobner of Germany in the gold-medal finals. Kelly is a two-time Cadet National champion in the United States.

Two U.S. wrestlers were defeated in the gold-medal finals and claimed silver medals: Mary Kelly of Mahomet, Ill. at 83 pounds and Jessica Martin of Flint, Mich at 143 pounds. Kelly was a 1998 Cadet National champion, and Martin was second in the 1998 Cadet Nationals.

Winning bronze medals for the United States were Erin Tomeo of Volant, Pa. at 101 pounds, Devin Kelly of Mercer, Pa. at 108 pounds and Marcie Van Dusen of Twin Peaks, Calif. at 123 pounds. Tomeo and Van Dusen are three-time Cadet National champions, while Kelly was a Cadet National silver medalist.

Russia won the team title with 87 points, followed by the United States with 74 points and Poland with 60 points. Japan was fourth and Germany placed fifth.

Each of the 10 U.S. athletes placed in the top seven of their weight classes.

Katrina Betts of Milan, Mich. was fourth at 114 pounds and Melissa Moore of San Jose, Calif. was fifth at 88 pounds. Other U.S placewinners were Jessica Bartley of Hazel Park, Mich., who was sixth at 154 pounds and Rosario DeCola of Ann Arbor, Mich., who was seventh at 132 pounds.

The U.S. team was coached by four-time World silver medalist Shannon Williams of Simi Valley, Calif.

The U.S. team was determined at the 1998 Women¹s Cadet World Team Trials, held in LaCrosse, Wis., April 11.
