TWO U.S. WRESTLERS FINISH TOP SIX IN GRECO-ROMAN AT WORLD YOUTH GAMES
Justin Millard (Bellefonte, Pa.) had a top-six finish in the 76 kg.-weight class to wrap-up Greco-Roman wrestling for the U.S. Millard lost 11-0 by a technical fall to Georgia's Rurua George to eliminate him from medal contention.
"I didn't wrestle well today," said Millard of his match versus Georgia. "I needed to work more on his arms and I kept going for his body. I'm happy with my overall performance at these games. This is only my second international trip and I had a lot of fun with this team. There is not a lot of wrestling where I'm from so this was a great learning experience."
Overall, the Greco-Roman team finished with four top-12 placements.Jeremiah Knabe was fifth at 83 kg. Josh Lamano was 10th at 52 kg and Roy Williams was 10th at 95 kg.
U.S. FREESTYLE WRESTLERS START TOURNAMENT
Preliminary matches in freestyle wrestling begin Wednesday at Trudoviye Rezervy Sports Complex. The U.S. team has been in Moscow for several days preparing for the event.
Despite a youthful team, U.S. head coach Cliff Laughlin (Idaho Falls, Idaho) has a great deal of experience. Laughlin was an assistant coach
at the 1996 Olympic Games and two World Championships.
"This is a young team and they are new to international competition," said Laughlin. "This will be a great learning experience for the U.S. We have some quality athletes that have had some strong performances. We have been working out the past few days to find out the strengths of the
team."
Donny Reynolds (Movena, Ill.) is the smallest on the U.S. team, competing in the 42kg weight class. He is the four-time Illinois State
freestyle and Great Lakes Festival champion at Providence Catholic. Burke Barnes (Lake Stevens, Wash.) competes in the 45kg weight class and is the four-time Washington state champion. Cal Ferry (Machesney Park, Ill.) wrestles in the 48kg class and is the '98 Indiana state champion. Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.), who placed fourth at the '98 World Cadet Team Trials, is in the 52kg weight class. Teammate Jake Rosholt (Sandpoint, Idaho) also placed fourth at the trials and wrestles at 69kg.
The 63kg U.S. member is Michael Pirozolla (Levittown, Pa.), who is the two-time World Cadet Trials freestyle champion (97-98). Matt Winterberg (Richland Center, Wis.) represents the U.S. in the 76kg class and placed fourth at the '98 World Cadet Trials. Karl Knothe (Stillwater, Minn.) won the '98 Cadet World Trials and participates in the 83kg. Brandon Phelps (Cornell, Wis.) wrestles in the heaviest class for the U.S. at 95kg and also placed fourth at the trials.
