U.S. quotes from Goodwill Games bout against Russia

Sam Henson (USA) 54 kg./119.05 lbs. Defeated Leonid Chuchonov (RUS), 4-1 - "I went back to my hotel room last night. I spent about three hours about how I'm wrestling. I got beaten badly yesterday and I don't like to lose."

"This was Sam. I had had mental lapses. If I don't do that, I can win every time."

Tony Purler (USA) 58 kg./127.86 lbs. Defeated Murat Ramazanov (RUS), 4-0 - "I got in my high crotch. He got his legs crossed, I grabbed his knee and put him in the hold. It was one of my old college moves. It was luck. You don't get many falls in international competition. I guess I got the team going, but I'm more concerned about myself. It's more of an individual sport to me."

"I didn't even know I was going to have (this opponent). But my coach told me a little bit about him. The crowd was fantastic. The Iranian crowd really gets into it to."

Cary Kolat (USA) 63 kg./138.88 lbs. Defeated Magomed Azizov (RUS), 8-3 - "I didn't want the score to look bad. I didn't want it to be 4-3, I wanted to finish on a good note. Henson beat a guy he had lost to twice, Purler had the great fall and I didn't want to be the one to kill the momentum."

"I was very disappointed in my performance at the start of this tournament. I'm still disappointed. There are some mistakes I made. There were a few situations. I'm still as little troubled. Right now, with the performance I gave, I wouldn't be bringing home any medals in the World Championships. But I'm going to straighten it out and I definitely think I can win a medal."

Lincoln McIlravy (USA) 69 kg/152.11 lbs Defeated Velikhan Alakhverdiev (RUS), 5-2 - "It was great to win the gold and I think I wrestled well, but I judge my performance based on effor and not on outcome and I still think I can improve. Winning here is a great stepping stone, but the World Championships are most important and I feel that my conditioning and my strength have me prepared for them."

Steve Marianetti (USA) - "When you get to the next level after college, you know you're finally going to get to wrestle the World Champion. You think you can prepare yourself for it, but you have go through it once before you can really get in there with him. I tried to convince myself I wasn't nervous, but I was. I've watched this guy a hundred times because I like the way he wrestles. He is the best in the world and I've got a ways to go, no doubt about it."

Les Gutches (USA) 85 kg/187.39 lbs. Defeated Khadijmorad Magomedov (RUS), 3-1 - "The Russians have been here for three days. I know that the third day I was in Krasnoyarsk (Russia) was the hardest day physiologically as far as adapting to the new time zone. And I've got to give it to them because I had a week in Siberia before I had to wrestle. The third day is the hardest day on your body. And that may be a little evidence of what we're seeing today. That, and a combination of Kolat, McIlravy and Henson in particular, who look like an animal, and if I would have lost that I'd have been very upset with myself."

"For the Worlds I have to go back wrestling shorter matches work on Michael Johnson-type of stuff while I've been training like the Kenyans, getting high volume training and build up a good base."

(ON GOING TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN IRAN) - "I think that the Iranian wrestling federation and the Iranian government in particular have a lot to gain from by us going there and getting back safe. I'm going there to win a World Championship, I don't care if I have to slep in a barn and set my stuff on a bale of hay. I'm going for one reason, and one reason only and that's to win. If I want to take a vacation, I'll go to Hawaii."

Melvin Douglas (USA) - "It's a lot of wrestling for a 34 year old body and I've been concerned about my conditioning. It's been my primary focus because in my current situation, training in Arizona, training partners have been few and far between.  It's a situation I need to rectify, but I've worked hard since coming to New York in the training camp and I feel I've had a good tournament. I like the 213-pound weight class, it means that making weight becomes easier for me."

"You heard what the crowd was like today, you heard the crowd roar. At the World Championships, take what you heard today and multiply it a hundred times."

Kerry McCoy (USA) - "When I got down 1-0, I knew it was going to be tough to score. I tried to get an escape to even it up, but he had a better lock than I thought he did and he was able to score. Now we're even 1-1, I beat him a couple of months ago in Lakewood, N.J. and now he's beaten me. When you go head to head with a big guy like that, nine times out of ten, you lose. He outweighs me by 30 to 40 pounds."

John Smith, USA Head coach: "We made some things happen in those first two matches. The match with Cary Kolat could have been one of the better matches of the night. It made things happen for us. There's no question that throughout this tournament the upper weights are what did it for us. This match, those first four weights, are what won the tournament for us. There's no question."

"Obviously, this tournament is something the team will build on going to the World championships. I don't want to build the Goodwill Games up to be bigger than a World title, but this will give us the momentum we need going into the next month. Anytime we can go out and win and beat teams like Russia, Iran and Turkey it's a good thing for this sport. It's very positive. It tells us we're heading in the right direction."
