MATT HASBROOK QUALIFIES FOR GOLD MEDAL FINALS AT CADET WORLD GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA
Matt Hasbrook of Indianapolis, Ind. has qualified for the gold medal finals at 209.25 pounds at the 1998 Cadet World Greco-Roman Championships, held in Pretoria, South Africa.
The top 14-16 year old wrestlers in the world are competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two international styles of wrestling.
Hasbrook pinned Peter Cseh of Hungary in 3:02 for his second win of the tournament. He will face a competitor from Georgia in the championship match.
1997 Cadet Nationals champion Nathan Piasecki of Minocqua, Wis. lost his first match of the tournament at 99 pounds, but still has an opportunity to battle back for a bronze medal through the consolation rounds.
Three other U.S. wrestlers in competition on Friday suffered their second losses in the tournament and are out of contention for a medal. They do have a chance, in some cases, to place in the top 10 of their weights, however.
They are Michael Simpson of Anaheim, Calif. at 114.5 pounds, 1998 Cadet Nationals champion Nick Zajac of Hastings, Minn. at 167.5 pounds and Paul Carlson of Cedar, Minn. at 138.75 pounds.
Four U.S. wrestlers who were eliminated from competition on Thursday placed in the top 10 of their weight divisions.
Tim Kraemer of Cold Springs, Minn. placed seventh at 182.5 pounds. 1998 Cadet Nationals champion Cam Jones of Salt Lake City, Utah placed eighth at 92.5 pounds. Placing ninth for the United States were 1998 Cadet Nationals champion Jason Moreno of Firebaugh, Calif., at 105.5 pounds and Steven Garcia of Cypress, Calif. at 125.5 pounds.
The U.S. team is led by head coach Matt Wilkinson of Princeton, N.J. and assistant coach Marty Morgan of Minneapolis, Minn.
