Hasbrook wins silver medal at Cadet Greco-Roman Worlds; USA places sixth

HASBROOK CLAIMS SILVER MEDAL; PIASECKI PLACES FOURTH AT CADET WORLD GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA; USA PLACES SIXTH IN THE TEAM STANDINGS 

Matt Hasbrook of Indianapolis, Ind. won a silver medal at 209.25 pounds at the 1998 Cadet World Greco-Roman Championships, held in Pretoria, South Africa.

The top 14-16 year old wrestlers in the world are competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two international styles of wrestling.

Hasbrook was defeated in the gold medal match by Ilya Lezhava of Georgia, in a 10-0 technical fall. Hasbrook won two matches to qualify for the championship finals.

1997 Cadet Nationals champion Nathan Piasecki of Minocqua, Wis. placed fourth at 99 pounds. In the bronze medal match, he was defeated by Baghemya Shahram of Iran, 11-5.

The three other U.S. wrestlers who were eliminated on Friday all placed in the top 10 of their weight classes. Paul Carlson of Cedar, Minn. was sixth at 138.75 pounds, Michael Simpson of Anaheim, Calif. was seventh at 114.5 pounds, and 1998 Cadet Nationals champion Nick Zajac of Hastings, Minn. was ninth at 167.5 pounds

The United States placed sixth in the team standings with 38 points. Nine of the 10 U.S. wrestlers placed in the top 10 of their weight classes and earned team points for the USA.

Russia claimed the team title with 81 points, followed by Turkey with 75 points. Ukraine, Georgia and Iran rounded out the top five nations.

The U.S. team was led by head coach Matt Wilkinson of Princeton, N.J. and assistant coach Marty Morgan of Minneapolis, Minn.
