RUIZ REMAINS ALIVE AFTER DAY ONE AT JUNIOR WORLD GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CAIRO, EGYPT, AUG. 18 

Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/Elite) remains alive in the hunt for a bronze medal at 198.25 pounds at the FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

The tournament features the best 17-20 year old wrestlers in the World, competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two Olympic styles.

Ruiz opened with a 4-1 win over Diva Savilo of Latvia, then lost to Mirko Englich of Germany, 5-2. Englich is the German Junior and Senior National champion who also won the 1998 Concord Cup title.

In his first consolation bout, Ruiz scored a 2-0 overtime refereeĀ¹s decision over Jannick Szezepaniak of France. Ruiz, who placed fifth in the 1997 Junior World Championships, is still eligible to wrestle back for the bronze medal.

Four other U.S. athletes who started competition on Tuesday were defeated twice and have been eliminated from medal contention. They include Jason Powell (Choctaw, Okla./Cowboy WC) at 108 pounds, Chris Williams (Perry, Mich./Michigan State) at 123.25 pounds, Brandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 143.25 pounds and Tom Ciezki (Evanston, Ill./Wildcat WC) at 167.5 pounds.

McNab won two of his four matches, including wins over Alex Yohananoo of Israel, 3-0 and Maustafa Rafat of Egypt. He was eliminated in a 1-1 overtime refereeĀ¹s decision against Lin Ming of China.

Powell and Ciezki each had 1-2 records, whil Williams went 0-2 in the tournament.

Five other U.S. wrestlers begin competition tomorrow: Brady Jones (Salt Lake City, Utah/Sundance) at 114.5 pounds, Leroy Vega (Valparaiso, Ind./Minn. Storm) at 132.25 pounds, Nathan Vasquez (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 154.25 pounds, Mike Mathers (Canby, Ore./U.S. Army) at 182.75 pounds and Billy Blunt (Modesto, Calif./NC State) at 253.5 pounds.

The U.S. team is coached by Dan Russell of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Steve Sabo of Herndon, Va.
