FOUR ALIVE IN CONSOLATION ROUNDS AT JUNIOR WORLD GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CAIRO, EGYPT, AUG. 19
Four wrestlers who started competition on Wednesday remain alive in the consolation rounds at the FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
The tournament features the best 17-20 year old wrestlers in the World, competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two Olympic styles.
All four wrestlers have one loss, and can not place any higher than third in their weight classes. They include Brady Jones (Salt Lake City, Utah/Sundance) at 114.5 pounds, Leroy Vega (Valparaiso, Ind./Minn. Storm) at 132.25 pounds, Mike Mathers (Canby, Ore./U.S. Army) at 182.75 pounds and Billy Blunt (Modesto, Calif./NC State) at 253.5 pounds.
Vega lost his first match, but rebounded with a technical fall over Efremov Asnolo of Israel, 14-4.
Mathers won his first bout over Juri Matysek of the Czech Republic, 5-4, but lost a 2-1 overtime bout to Bojan Nijatov of Yugoslavia in round two.
Jones and Blunt lost their first match, and will compete in the second round on Thursday.
One U.S. wrestler who started competition on Wednesday, Nathan Vasquez (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) was eliminated at 154.25 pounds with two losses.
Two U.S. wrestlers from the first group of five athletes lost their second match of the tournament, and were eliminated from medal contention: Tom Ciezki (Evanston, Ill./Wildcat WC) at 167.5 pounds and Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/Elite) at 198.25 pounds
Ciezki lost to Yusef Duzer of Turkey, 4-2, in overtime in his consolation bout. It was erroneously reported by USA Wrestling on Tuesday that Ciezki lost a match to Peter Szabo of Hungary.
Ruiz dropped his second match of the event, losing to Han Yae-Young of Korea, 9-1 in the consolation rounds. Ruiz was fifth in the 1997 Junior World Championships.
The U.S. team is coached by Dan Russell of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Steve Sabo of Herndon, Va.
