Frank Lewis, 85, an Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalist at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany passed away on August 16, 1988 in Stillwater, Okla.
Lewis claimed a gold medal at 158.5 pounds in the Berlin Games, the only U.S. wrestling champion at the 1936 Olympics. He was elected as a distinguished member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1979.
He was a high school state wrestling champion from Cushing, Okla., but did not plan to compete at Oklahoma A&M University (now Oklahoma State). He was an NCAA runner-up in 1934 and the NCAA champion in 1935.
He won the national AAU freestyle title in 1935, and was the first athlete officially recognized as outstanding wrestler. He went undefeated in the 1936 Olympic Trials process to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.
After his athletic career, Lewis became an oil and gas operator and a rancher. He is survived by his wife Virginia, two sons, Frank, Tom and Rick, two daughers Nancy Garrett and Mary Warren, and nine grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma State University athletic department for the wrestling program in care of Strode Funeral Home, PO Box 487, Stillwater, OK 74076.
