Leroy Vega (Valparaiso, Ind./Minn. Storm) remains alive in his quest for a bronze medal at 132.25 pounds at the FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, August 20.
The tournament features the best 17-20 year old wrestlers in the World, competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two Olympic styles.
Vega defeated Abdelkader Lammouki of Marocco, 5-4 and Sebastien Hidalego of France, 6-3 in Thursday¹s action. Vega is the lone U.S. wrestler who will compete on Friday, Aug. 21, the final day of competition.
Two U.S. wrestlers, Mike Mathers (Canby, Ore./U.S. Army) at 182.75 pounds and Billy Blunt (Modesto, Calif./NC State) at 253.5 pounds, won their first match of the day, but were eliminated from medal contention with a second loss in the tournament.
Mathers pinned Jerry Van de Pol of the Netherlands in 3:29, but then lost to Marian Bradea of Romania, 3-0.
Blunt opened the day with a victory by default over Andri Chekhovskoi of Belarus. He was eliminated in a 3-1 loss to Nico Schmidt of Germany.
Brady Jones (Salt Lake City, Utah/Sundance) dropped his second match at 114.5 pounds and was also eliminated. He fell to Yusuf Yesilyurt of Turkey, 5-1.
The U.S. team is coached by Dan Russell of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Steve Sabo of Herndon, Va.
