FINAL STANDINGS ANNOUNCED AT 1998 JUNIOR WORLD GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CAIRO, EGYPT 

Russia won the team title, followed by Iran and Turkey, at the 1998 Junior World Greco-Roman Championships in Cairo, Egypt, August 18-21.

The tournament featured the best 17-20 year old wrestlers in the World, competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two Olympic styles.

The U.S. team, which was coached by Dan Russell of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Steve Sabo of Herndon, Va., placed 26th in the final standings.

Three U.S. wrestlers placed in the top 10 of their weight classes: Leroy Vega (Valparaiso, Ind./Minn. Storm) was ninth at 132.25 pounds. Placing 10th for the United States were Mike Mathers (Canby, Ore./U.S. Army) at 182.75 pounds and Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/Elite) at 198.25 pounds.

It was erroneously reported on Saturday that Vega placed 10th in his weight class. A correction on the final placings was provided at the conclusion of the tournament.
