DAVE SCHULTZ MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., FEB. 12-13 

The first annual Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament has been scheduled for February 12-13, 1999 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The wrestling tournament will feature top athletes from the United States and a number of foreign nations competing in both freestyle and Greco-Roman on the Senior level. The competition will be hosted at the U.S. Army Post Field House at Fort Carson, Colo.

Two years ago, the world was robbed of a precious resource in the sport of wrestling. Dave Schultz was an international hero, well respected around the world for his goodwill, sportsmanship and talent. More than a master technician and champion wrestler, Dave Schultz represented the sport with great nobility and emotion. Always an ambassador, Dave brought determination, discipline, integrity and an exceptional spirit to the wrestling community worldwide.

To honor his memory, USA Wrestling and the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation have worked together to create the Dave Schultz Memorial International. The Colorado Springs Sports Corporation is also supporting this historic competition by assisting in the promotion and coordination of the event.

"This tournament represents the spirit of friendship, sportsmanship and goodwill that Dave exemplified so well," said Nancy Schultz, the President of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation. "Through his open mind and open heart, Dave taught many of us to look beyond the boundaries of countries and language to look at our similarities and common love of the sport of wrestling."

Many top international wrestling nations are expected to participate. Dave Schultz was a hero in many nations, respected not only for his outstanding wrestling abilities but also for his sportsmanship and goodwill.

Top athletes from the best wrestling clubs in the nation are expected to participate, in addition to many countries sending delegations. Clubs already included are the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club, the Sunkist Kids, the New York Athletic Club, the Armed Forces, the Minnesota Storm, the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, the Michigan Wrestling Club and many others. Invited countries include Russia, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Ukraine, France, Korea, Japan, Cuba, Poland, Germany and Canada.

Colorado Springs is one of the world's hotbeds for wrestling. The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Wrestling have their national headquarters in the city. In addition, the U.S. Olympic Training Center resident programs in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling are based there. The World Class Athlete Program for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force are also stationed in the area.

Dave Schultz won an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling at 163 pounds in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif. Before that, he was a World Champion in 1983. Schultz won an amazing seven World/Olympic medals during his career, in addition to titles at the Pan American Games, the World Cup and the Goodwill Games. He was a national champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
