WORLD CHAMPION FREESTYLE WRESTLER SAMMIE HENSON NAMED USOC MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBERThe United States Olympic Committee has named Sammie Henson, freestyle wrestler, and Lindsay Davenport, tennis, its September Athletes of the Month.
Henson was the lone U.S. gold medalist at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Tehran, Iran. Davenport became the first American to win a women's singles title at the U.S. Open in 16 years. Davenport received six of the 11 first-place votes, while Henson garnered five of the 11 first-place votes.
Henson won the gold medal at 119 pounds at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships, Sept. 8-11. He defeated 1996 Olympic silver medalist Namik Abduallayev of Azerbaijan to win the title, the only U.S. champion at the tournament. His victory led the USA to a third-place finish as a team, and the American national anthem was played in Iran for the first time in almost 20 years during the medal ceremony.
Finishing second was cycling's Lance Armstrong, who placed fourth at the Tour of Spain. It was his first complete stage race in two years, following his bout with testicular cancer. Chris Ahrens of rowing placed third.
Davenport won the 1998 U.S. Open 6-3, 7-5 over No. 1 ranked and defending champion Martina Hingis. The single championships was the first of Davenport's career, and the first U.S. woman to win since Chris Evert in 1982. Track star Marion Jones placed second, and soccer star Mia Hamm placed third.
