BRACKEN, TRIGG TOP STARS AT WINTER CLASSIC IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., NOV. 7

Greco-Roman wrestler Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and freestyle wrestler Frank Trigg (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) were named Outstanding Wrestlers at the 1998 Winter Classic, held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 7.

Bracken claimed the 152-pound title, pinning Steven Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) in 3:30 in the gold medal match. It was Bracken¹s second straight Outstanding Wrestler award, after claiming the honor at the Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open, Oct. 24-25 in Tempe, Ariz. Bracken, a U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) resident athlete, competed for the USA in the 1998 World Championships.

Trigg defeated Byron Tucker (Norman, Okla./Team Excel), 5-3 in the gold-medal finals. It was the first major Senior-level title in Trigg¹s career.

Among the Greco-Roman champions was two-time Olympian Shawn Sheldon (Colo. Spgs, Colo./New York AC), who edged Jacob Hey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force), 3-2 in the gold-medal match. Sheldon, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in his weight class, competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games.

Leading the freestyle field were a pair of U.S. Olympic team alternates, John Fisher (Ypsilanti, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 138.75 pounds and Tom Erikson (W. Lafayette, Ind./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.

Fisher, who was second in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Team Trials, beat Steve St. John (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 9-0 in the finals.

Erikson, a three-time Olympic Trials runner-up, won by injury default over Tyrone Davis (West Hempstead, N.Y.). Erikson placed fourth in the 1997 World Championships.

Ten of the 16 champions in the tournament live in the Colorado Springs area. Colorado Springs is home of the U.S. Olympic Training Center resident programs in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, as well as the World Class Athlete Programs for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.
