DAVE SCHULTZ WRESTLING CLUB PLACES SECOND AT HENRI DEGLANE CHALLENGE IN NICE, FRANCE WITH THREE INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSA team of U.S. wrestlers from the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club placed second at the 24nd annual Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, Nov. 25-28.
The 1998 Henri Deglane Challenge included 13 teams and featured competition in six weight classes in freestyle and six weight classes in Greco-Roman. Russia won the team title with 52 points, followed by the Dave Schultz WC with 47 points and France with 32 points.
The Dave Schultz WC featured three individual freestyle champions: Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./DSWC) at 127.75 pounds, John Giura (New York, N.Y./DSWC) at 152 pounds and Trevor Lewis (Malvern, Pa./DSWC) at 167.5 pounds.
Boumans, a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete, won three matches in the tournament, including a victory over Jean-Francois Cornil of France in the gold medal finals.
Giura also had three victories, headlined by a decision over Radev Vassilev of Bulgaria in the finals.
Lewis, who had a 2-0 record, defeated Oleg Danilov of Russia in the finals.
Winning a silver medal in freestyle was Johnny Curtis (Fairfax, Va./DSWC) at 213.75 pounds, who was defeated in the finals by Miguel Molina of Cuba.
Freestyle bronze medals were captured by Jeremy Ensrud (Eugene, Ore./DSWC) at 138.75 pounds and Jon McGovern (Philadelphia, Pa./DSWC) at 187.25 pounds
In Greco-Roman, U.S. athletes on the Dave Schultz team winning bronze medals were Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds and two-time Olympian Dan Henderson (Huntington Beach, Calif./DSWC) at 187.25 pounds.
Placing fourth in their weight classes were Greco-Roman athletes Heath Sims (Huntington Beach, Calif./DSWC) at 152 pounds and Randy Couture (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 213.75 pounds. Brandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) was fifth at 138.75 pounds in Greco-Roman.
The U.S. team was coached by Dan Chaid of San Jose, Calif., and the team leader was Nancy Schultz of Foster City, Calif. A delegation of U.S. wrestling fans accompanied the team on its tour.
