UM-Morris beats Lakehead U of Canada in women's college dual meet, 36-8

UNIV. OF MINNESOTA-MORRIS DEFEATS LAKEHEAD UNIV. OF CANADA IN WOMEN'S COLLEGE FREESTYLE DUAL MEET, 36-8 

The host University of Minnesota-Morris won nine of 11 bouts to defeat Lakehead University of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, 36-8, in a college freestyle wrestling dual meet in Morris, Minn., 36-8.

The Univ. of Minnesota-Morris is the first university in the United States to sponsor a varsity wrestling team for women wrestlers. This is believed to be the first women's college wrestling varsity dual meet ever held in the United States.

UM-Morris, which is coached by Doug Reese, won the first eight matches for an insurmountable lead. Among the winners for the Cougars was Tina George (S. Euclid, Ohio), the No. 1 ranked Senior-level wrestler in the nation, who pinned Patrice Allen in 1:16.

The UM-Morris team features four other nationally ranked wrestlers on the Senior level, all who won their dual meet matches against Lakehead Univ.: Sarah McMann (Marion, N.C), Nina Vernon (Rodeo, Calif.), Katie Downing (Pendleton, Ind.) and Cassie Inman (Rochelle, Ill.).
