U.S. Army wrestlers Nieradka, Loukides and Byers win silver medals at Devataev Tournament in RussiaThree members of the U.S. Army wrestling team, Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), Jason Loukides (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) claimed silver medals at the Devataev Tournament of Greco-Roman wrestling, Dec. 11-13 in Saransk, Russia.
Nieradka was defeated in the gold-medal finals by Alexander Pafilkin of Russia, by a 2-1 referee's decision in overtime. Nieradka won three matches on the way to the championship match.
Loukides also lost in the finals by a 2-1 referee's decision, losing to Vasili Vlasov of Russia. He won his first match Alexei Gushin of Russia, 1-0 to qualify for the finals.
Byers lost an even closer match, dropping a 0-0 referee's decision in overtime to Oleg Parshin of Russia. Byers won his first two matches to make the championship round.
Just missing a medal was Justin Weber (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), who was fourth at 119 pounds with a 2-2 record. In the bronze-medal match, he was beaten by Renat Bekinin of Russia, 8-0.
Two U.S. Army athletes placed eighth: Jason Tolbert (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 138.75 pounds and Mark Fiore (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 187.25 pounds.
The U.S. Army team competed in this tournament during a December tour to Russia.
