STENGLEIN CLAIMS SILVER MEDAL AT GILBERT SCHAUB OPEN IN TOURCOING, FRANCE, JAN. 23-24Kristie Stenglein (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) claimed a silver medal at 165.25 pounds, the top U.S. performance at the Gilbert Schaub French Open for women, held in Tourcoing, France, Jan. 23-34.
Stenglein, a three-time World silver medalist, won four of her five matches, losing only to Monika Witkowska of Poland in the gold-medal finals, 8-0.
Three of her four victories were pins, including a 1:09 fall over Anna Hamplova of the Czech Rep., a 1:02 fall over Tamara Medwindski of Canada and a 2:01 fall over Edyta Witkowska of Poland. Stenglein also stopped fellow American Satrinina Vernon (Rodeo, Calif./UM-Morris), 7-0. Vernon placed eighth in the weight class.
The tournament featured many of the best women wrestlers in the world, including international powers Japan, France, Canada, Poland, Sweden and Germany.
Other U.S. athletes placing in the tournament were Diana Wesendunk (Hillsborough, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers) who was sixth at 149.75 pounds, Patricia Miranda (Saratoga, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) who was seventh at 112.25 pounds, Lauren Wolfe (Okemos, Mich./Michigan WC), who was seventh at 136.5 pounds, and Julie Gonzales (Vallejo, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers) who was 10th at 101.25 pounds.
