WRESTLING LEADER NANCY SCHULTZ SERVING AS HONORARY CO-CHAIRPERSON OF "WRESTLING FOR THE NEXT MILLENNIUM," A CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT AMATEUR WRESTLING

Wrestling leader Nancy Schultz has agreed to serve as an honorary co-chairperson for "Wrestling for the Next Millennium," a capital campaign designed to ensure that man's oldest sport thrives in the 21st century and beyond.

Schultz announced her support for the campaign during the first day of the inaugural Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Tournament, which is being held February 12-13, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Nancy Schultz is the widow of 1984 Olympic Champion Dave Schultz, an international sports hero, who was respected around the world for his goodwill, sportsmanship and talent.

Nancy Schultz serves as the president of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation, which provides opportunities for talented freestyle, Greco-Roman and women wrestlers to pursue their dreams

"It is with utmost respect to those athletes who have been our heroes in the past, with admiration for those striving for greatness today, with hope for our champions of tomorrow and with love for David and the memory that he leaves behind that I take part in this 'Campaign for Wrestling,'" said Schultz. "With your help, we can make this vision a reality and ensure the future of this unique sport."

The three most influential organizations within the sport of wrestling have combined to create this campaign. USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum will work together to raise $10 million by the end of the year 2000.

Schultz is excited about many new opportunities in wrestling, including the first-ever Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament, which is expected to feature as many as 12 nations.

"I'm excited to be in Colorado Springs and work with USA Wrestling to create a tournament that represents Dave's spirit of international friendship and sportsmanship," said Schultz. "Having an international training camp alongside the tournament is the kind of activity that Dave would have liked. He would have truly enjoyed the atmosphere surrounding this competition."

Schultz has committed her time and efforts to assist "Wrestling for the Next Millennium," which is designed to help the sport on many levels.

"One of the unique things about Dave's career is that he had longevity," said Schultz. "To have longevity, you need to have good support and sponsorship. To have these three organizations looking to endow portions of their programs that support athletes will make sure that future athletes will reach their full potential."

As part of the campaign, USA Wrestling, the National Governing Body for the sport, aims to raise $6 million to endow its National Team programs in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's freestyle wrestling.

Funds will also be earmarked to help educate coaches, to attract newcomers to the sport, to preserve and promote the history of wrestling, and to help underprivileged youth "Beat the Street."
