ACTION EXCITING AT FIRST DAY OF THE INAUGURAL DAVE SCHULTZ MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.Many world-class international wrestlers, competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman, competed on Friday in the first day of action at the inaugural Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Championships at the Post Field house at Fort Carson, Colo.
The tournament is being held in memory of the late Dave Schultz, a 1984 Olympic champion freestyle wrestler who was internationally respected as an ambassador of goodwill and sportsmanship.
A total of 196 athletes entered the competition, including 101 Greco-Roman wrestlers and 95 freestyle athletes. A total of 12 nations were represented in the tournament.
The preliminary pool competition was held, which determined which athletes would remain eligible for medal contention. A number of World-class athletes in both styles moved into the semifinals, and will battle for the right to compete for medals on Saturday.
Among the star athletes who are in medal contention include 1996 Olympic gold medalist Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria, who is competing at 138.75 pounds in Greco-Roman, as well as 1997 World Champion Marko Yli-Hannuksela of Finland, a Greco-Roman star at 167.5 pounds.
A total of 39 U.S. wrestlers are still alive in the hunt for medals, led by two-time Olympian Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a 119-pound Greco-Roman wrestler who placed second in the 1991 World Championships.
On Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., the semifinals will be held. The gold medal and bronze medal matches will be held at 7:00 p.m.
A session, originally scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday has been cancelled, as the bouts will be held in the morning session.
