ELEVEN U.S. WRESTLERS CLAIM GOLD MEDALS AT INAUGURAL DAVE SCHULTZ MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., FEB. 12-13A total of 11 U.S. athletes claimed gold medals at the inaugural Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Championships at the Post Field house at Fort Carson, Colo., Feb. 12-13.
The tournament included both freestyle and Greco-Roman and was held in memory of the late Dave Schultz, a 1984 Olympic champion freestyle wrestler who was internationally respected as an ambassador of goodwill and sportsmanship.
The U.S. won seven of the eight freestyle gold medals awarded during the competition.
Two of the freestyle champions were members of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club and also resident athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center: Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 127.75 pounds and Brandon Slay (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 167.5 pounds.
Boumans scored a takedown in overtime to defeat veteran international star Bogdan Ciufelescu of Romania, 6-5 at 6:27, and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the freestyle division. Boumans, a USOTC resident athlete, was also the first ever champion of the event from the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club.
Slay jumped to a 9-0 lead on the way to scoring a pin over Frank Trigg (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) in 2:30.
Other U.S. freestyle champions were Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan.) at 119 pounds, John Fisher (Ypsilanti, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 138.75 pounds, Alan Fried (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 152 pounds, Chad Lamer (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 213.75 pounds and Tom Erikson (W. Lafayette, Ind./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.
Akin stopped Sheldon Thomas (Bellefonte, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) in a tight 6-5 match. Akin is ranked No. 2 in the USA, while Thomas holds a No. 3 national ranking.
Fisher won a high-scoring battle with Roger Chandler (Bloomington, Ind./Dave Schultz WC), 11-7. Fisher is a two-time Olympic Trials runner-up and a 1997 World Cup champion.
Fried scored an impressive 7-1 victory over 1995 World silver medalist Takahiro Wada of Japan.
Lamer and Erikson closed the meet with dominant wins. Lamer scored a 10-0 techinal fall over Rolf Scherer of Switzerland in 4:40. Erikson, who was fourth in the 1997 World Championships, pinned Airron Richardson (Cleveland, Ohio/Team Excel) in 2:11;
U.S. Greco-Roman champions included Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 119 pounds, Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds and Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds. All four are U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes.
Sheldon, a two-time Olympian and 1991 World silver medalist, defeated Jeff Cervone (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force), 3-0. It was a rematch of the 1998 U.S. Nationals finals, also won by Sheldon.
Gruenwald, the 1998 Pan American champion, was dominant in a 10-0 technical fall over Nishimi Kenkichi of Japan in 1:59.
Niebuhr, the 1998 U.S. Nationals champion, pinned Tomi Rajmaki of Finland in 5:31. Gardner stopped Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 4-0.
The Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman was 1996 Olympic gold medalist Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria, who claimed the title at 138.75 pounds. Nazarian, a five-time World medalist, pinned Peter Phillipisch of Austria in 1:59 to claim the gold.
1997 World Champion Marko Yli-Hannuksela of Finland was the champion at 167.5 pounds, defeating T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC), 6-0.
The other two foreign Greco-Roman champions were Ari Harkanen of Finland at 152 pounds and Alli Mollov of Bulgaria at 213.75 pounds. The lone foreign freestyle champion was Gia Torchinava of the Netherlands, the 187.25 pound champion. Attending the championships was Dave Schultz's widow Nancy Schultz, his father Philip Schultz, his mother Jean St. Germaine and his brother Michael Davidson.
A total of 196 athletes entered the competition, including 101 Greco-Roman wrestlers and 95 freestyle athletes. A total of 12 nations were represented in the tournament.
