WORLD CHAMPIONS HENSON, GUTCHES CLAIM GOLD MEDALS AT YASAR DOGU TOURNAMENT IN TURKEY, FEB. 11-12World champion freestyle wrestlers Sammie Henson (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) and Les Gutches (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) claimed gold medals at the respected Yasar Dogu Tournament in Ankara, Turkey, Feb. 11-12.
Henson, a 1998 World Champion at 119 pounds, won four straight matches to capture the gold medal. He opened with victories over veterans Maxim Molonov of Russia, 10-4, and Maulen Mamyrov of Kazakhstan, 6-5. Henson had defeated both of these wrestlers during his march to the 1998 World title in Tehran, Iran last summer.
He scored technical falls in his last two matches, beating R. Zincirci of Turkey, 13-3, in the semifinals and I. Djorev of Bulgaria, 11-0 in the gold medal match.
Gutches, a 1997 World Champion at 187.25 pounds, won five straight bouts to register the title. It was his first international event since placing seventh in the 1998 World Championships.
Gutches defeated two athletes who he lost to during the 1997-98 season. In the semifinals, he stopped Alexei Krupniakov of Russia, 4-1. Krupniakov had beaten Gutches, 4-2, at the 1998 World Cup in Stillwater, Okla.
In the gold-medal finals, Gutches defeated Magomed Kurguliev of Kazakhstan, 3-1. Kurguliev scored a 4-3 win over Gutches in the 1998 World Championships.
Claiming a bronze medal for the U.S. was Kerry McCoy (State College, Pa./New York AC) at 286 pounds. McCoy won three of his four matches. His only loss came in the semifinals to Aydin Polatci of Turkey, 3-2. McCoy had defeated Polatci in both the 1998 Goodwill Games and the 1998 World Championships.
In the bronze-medal match, McCoy stopped Z. Guler of Turkey, 4-0. McCoy was fourth at the 1998 World Championships.
Other U.S. wrestlers who placed in the tournament were Tony Purler (Clarion, Pa./Sunkist Kids), who was seventh at 127.75 pounds and T.J. Jaworsky (Chapel Hill, N.C./New York AC), who was seventh at 138.75 pounds.
The United States placed third in the team standings, behind host Turkey and Russia. Coaching the U.S. team were Jim Humphrey of Indianapolis, Ind. and National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo.
