Shawn Charles (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Sunkist Kids), Joe Williams (Markham, Ill./Hawkeye WC) and Johnny Curtis (Manassas, Va./Dave Schultz WC) claimed silver medals for the U.S.
Charles, the 1998 U.S. National Champion at 138.75 pounds, won four straight matches before losing to the 1995 World Champion, Elbrous Tedeev of the Ukraine, 9-5, in the title match.
He started with victories over Anto Raska of Estonia, pin at 5:27, and Sergi Latishev of the Ukraine, 5-2. Charles then scored a decision over fellow USA teammate Bill Zadick, 4-0, and defeated Ruslav Bodishtganu of Moldova, 3-1 in overtime to advance to the finals.
Williams claimed the silver medal at the 167.5 pound class in his first European international event. He first scored victories over Inal Dzagurov of Russia, pin at 5:50, Aleg Kushnir of the Ukraine, 6-3, and Akhmed Edevid of Bulgaria, 3-1. He then decisioned Anzor Tembotov of the Ukraine, 7-4, to make it to the final match. In the gold-medal finals, Williams lost to Alix Muzaev of the Ukraine, 4-1.
Curtis claimed his silver medal for the U.S. at 213.75 pounds. Curtis won three of his four matches. His only loss came in the finals to Artur Taimazov of Russia, 5-1. He first decisioned Vladimer Golorko of Russia, 6-0, then won by default over Yuri Korlyuck of the Ukraine, and then defeated Andrei Disky of the Ukraine, 8-1, to move on to the finals.
The U.S. team was coached by Dan Gable of Iowa City, Iowa, and Mike Duroe, the national freestyle development coach in Colorado Springs, Colo.
