CHRIS POFF, 69, WRESTLING COACH AND PHOTOGRAPHER, DIED ON FEBRUARY 27

Chris Poff, a nationally respected wrestling coach and photographer, died Saturday, Feb. 27 in Newtown, Pa.

Poff was a biology teacher and wrestling coach at Neshaminy High School and Pennsbury High School. He has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame, and was a past president of the Pennsylvania Coaches Association. He developed the successful Chris Poff Nationwide Wrestling Camps and Clinics.

Photography began as a hobby for Poff, but he developed into one of the best wrestling photographers in the nation. He served as the official photographer for USA Wrestling at many major events, including the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships and the Freestyle World Team Trials.

His photos appeared in major national wrestling publications including USA Wrestler, Amateur Wrestling News, Wrestling USA magazine and the National Mat News. He was named Photographer of the Year by the National Wrestling Media Association in 1993.

His son Chris serves as the head wrestling coach at Lock Haven University, one of the best Div. I wrestling programs in the nation.

Born in Lancaster, Pa., he lived in Bucks County for 45 years. He wqas a graduate of East Stroudsburg and Temple Universities. Poff also served in the U.S. Army Coprs of Engineers, Fort Belvoir, Va., where he served as a physical training instructor/special services trainer.

Poff was active in the local theater scene as an actor with the Bucks County Playhouse. Among the shows that he appeared in are "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "42nd Street," "Sugar Babies," and "Anything Goes."

He is survived by his wife of 45 year, Nora, three sons, Chris, Carl and Eric, a daughter, Leslie Jo Gallagher and five grandchildren.

A memorial service for Poff will be held on Tuesday, March 9, at the St. Andrews Catholic Church, Swamp Road in Newtown, Pa. at 8:00 p.m.
