United States defeats Poland in World Dual meet, 5-3,  March 7, in Krotoszyn, Poland 
  The United States freestyle wrestling team defeated Poland, 5-3, in a World Dual meet in Krotoszyn, Poland, March 7.  
 Sheldon Thomas (Clarion, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) scored a decision over Stanistaw Surdyka of Poland, 9-3, to record the win for the U.S. at 119 pounds. Thomas was the 1997 Sunkist Kids International Open champion and is ranked No. 3 in the United States.  
 Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) scored a decision over David Kret of Poland, 9-0, at 127.75 pounds. Mark Ironside (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) decisioned Marek Zielezinski of Poland, 6-1, to put the U.S. ahead.   
 Poland won the matches at 152 and 167.5 pounds when Dariusz Chojnacki decisioned Shannyn Gillespie (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) of the U.S. in a close match, 9-8, at 152 pounds. Marcin Jurecki of Poland won on a referee's decision over Daryl Weber (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC), 1-1, at 167.5 pounds.  
 The U.S. won two of the next three matches. Dan St. John (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) decisioned Tomasz Szdzerck of Poland, 3-1, at 187.25 pounds. St. John was the 1997 World Team Trials champion and the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion.  
 The 1998 World silver medalist, Marek Garmulewicz of Poland, scored a decision over J.J. McGrew (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) of the U.S., 2-1, at 213.75 pounds. Garmulewicz was also the 1996 European champion.  
 Airron Richardson (Cleveland, Ohio/Team Excel) won the final match for the U.S. at 286 pounds when he decisioned Ernest Marszotek of Poland, 3-0.
